A la fama mundial de Sylvia Plath (Boston, 1932-Londres, 1963) contribuyeron en un primer momento el eco de su trágica vida y su muerte voluntaria, así como su condición de mujer emblemática, pero son sus poemas, su perfección en el uso de la metáfora y su personal lenguaje lo que han hecho de Plath un símbolo.
Sus primeros libros son poemas eminentemente personales, intensos y delicados. Poesía controlada y seria, pero su obra posterior muestra la influencia sobre la autora de nuevas angustias y problemas que la conducen a una poesía de dolorosas confesiones. En 1956 se casó con el poeta Ted Hughes. Las dificultades y las frustraciones desde entonces asaltaron su vida, llegando al suicidio en 1963.

Sylvia Plath (Boston, October 27, 1932-London, February 11, 1963) was an American writer and poet. Considered one of the practitioners of the confessional poetry genre, her most famous works are her poetry collections The Colossus and Ariel and her semi-autobiographical novel The Bell Jar, published under the pseudonym "Victoria Lucas" four months before her suicide. She was married to the poet Ted Hughes, who after her death took charge of the editing of her complete poetry. In 1982, she won a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for her Collected Poems.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Plath studied at Smith College in Massachusetts and, after receiving a Fulbright Scholarship, at Newnham College in Cambridge.
