José María de la Concepción Apolinar Vargas Vila Bonilla fue un escritor colombiano cuya vida nómada y temperamento incendiario lo convirtieron en uno de los autores más polémicos de finales del siglo XIX y comienzos del XX. Su estilo directo, cargado de crítica política y un espíritu ferozmente anticlerical, lo llevó a enfrentarse abiertamente a gobiernos, iglesias y élites de su época. Vivió en varios países de América y Europa, siempre desde una posición de disidencia que defendió con la pluma como arma principal.

Su obra literaria es amplia y verificable, centrada en novelas, ensayos y textos panfletarios que retratan pasiones humanas, decadencias sociales y luchas ideológicas. Entre sus libros más conocidos se encuentra Ibis, una novela que encarna su tono apasionado y su crítica a la hipocresía moral. También escribió títulos como Aura o las violetas y Flor de fango, donde explora sensibilidades románticas combinadas con una mirada aguda y desafiante hacia la sociedad de su tiempo.
