La historia del imperialismo comienza en Asiria. Tal es la tesis argumentada en este libro, que reconstruye la ideología imperial asiria, matriz de la organización política, administrativa, religiosa y cultural de uno de los reinos, luego imperio, más paradigmáticos de las civilizaciones mesopotámicas antiguas. No se trata de establecer ingenuos primados, sino de investigar las formas simples del imperialismo, de esa «misión imperial» que Asiria encarna de un modo más directo y explícito que las complejas y sofisticadas ideologías posteriores. El caso asirio puede contribuir así a una mejor comprensión del fenómeno histórico del imperialismo que, mediante el estudio comparativo de sus distintas formaciones, deduce ideas y problemáticas, parecidos y divergencias.

Mario Liverani (1939) is an emeritus professor of Ancient Near East History at the University of Rome "La Sapienza". Former director of the Centro per le Antichità e la Storia dell’Arte del Vicino Oriente and the Istituto di Studi del Vicino Oriente, as well as the journals Oriens Antiquus and Vicino Oriente, he is a member of the American Oriental Society and an honorary doctorate from the Autonomous University of Madrid. His classic Antico Oriente. Storia, società, economia (1988) is accompanied by, among many other books, L’origine delle città (1986), Uruk la prima città (1998), and, more recently, Oltre la Bibbia. Storia antica di Israele (2003) or Imaginare Babele. Due secoli di studi sulla città orientale antica (2013)
