Señor Rulfo, ¿por qué lleva tantos años sin escribir nada? Es que se me murió el tío Celerino, que era el que me contaba las historias. Este libro habla de los que dejan de escribir (Rulfo, Rimbaud, Salinger...) e indaga en los motivos de cada uno para preferir no hacerlo. Todos conocemos a los bartlebys, son esos seres en los que habita una profunda negación del mundo. Toman su nombre del escribiente Bartleby, ese oficinista de un relato de Herman Melville que, cuando se le encargaba un trabajo o se le pedía que contara algo sobre su vida, respondía siempre, indefectiblemente diciendo: Preferiría no hacerlo. En "Bartleby y compañía" se habla del mal endémico de las letras contemporáneas, de la pulsión negativa o atracción por la nada. El narrador del libro, que está escribiendo un diario que al mismo tiempo es un cuaderno de notas a pie de página que comentan un texto invisible, demuestra su amplia solvencia como rastreador de bartlebys al pasear por el Laberinto del No, por los caminos de la que considera la más perturbadora y atractiva tendencia de las literaturas contemporáneas, tendencia en la que ve el único camino que queda abierto a la auténtica creación literaria, pues para él sólo de la pulsión negativa, del rechazo, sólo del Laberinto lúcido del No puede surgir la escritura por venir.
