Der Begriff "benutzerzentriertes Design" entstand in den 1980er Jahren im Forschungslabor von Donald Norman an der University of California San Diego (UCSD) und wurde nach der Veröffentlichung eines gemeinsam verfassten Buches mit dem Titel "User-Centered System Design" weithin verwendet: New perspectives on Human-Computer Interaction (Norman & Draper, 1986). Norman baute das UCD-Konzept in seinem bahnbrechenden Buch The Psychology Of Everyday Things (POET) (Norman, 1988) weiter aus. In POET erkennt er die Bedürfnisse und Interessen des Benutzers und konzentriert sich auf die Benutzerfreundlichkeit des Designs. Er bietet vier grundlegende Vorschläge, wie ein Design sein sollte.
