The story starts with the lives of Olivia Brown and her fiancé, Bailey Jacks, as they come to terms with their own secrets. Olivia, who believes her future is set on a predictable path, finds her life upended after a sexual encounter with her college friend, Luna. On the same day, Bailey comes out that he has been in a long-term, physical relationship with his friend Drew. Olivia and Bailey struggle to reconcile their desires with the expectations of their engagement, eventually deciding to embrace honesty and alternative relationship dynamics, such as polyamory. With help from Luna, they fall into a comfortable sexual encounter. The weekend takes a dark turn when Olivia is found dead, a tragedy that immediately triggers a police investigation led by Detective Harley Richie and Officer Jaclyn Valens. Witnesses report strange sightings, including a dog allegedly driving a car, and characters experience inexplicable flashes of intuition linked to the town's magical lore. Their search for the truth becomes increasingly complicated as Olivia's body vanishes from the secure morgue without triggering any alarms or security protocols. This causes Officer Valens to search the house of Olivia and Bailey where the supernatural has started to root itself in the backyard. When Luna is awoken by her girlfriend, Andi Conners, she is immediately told to stay with Officer Valens for the night. Andi and her husband, Roger Smith, are welcomed by a black dog on their front step, causing Andi to call her estranged sister, Randi Talbert and reconcile as they start to plan a way to fix this weekend. After Drew talks with Bailey in their canine forms, Randi and Drew seek out in the middle of the night to find the Barista, Marc, who knows almost everything in Erosville. When they stop at a bar, Randi learns that they are being followed by who wants the spirit in Olivia. Thinking on her feet, she and Drew sneak into Olivia's house to look for anything that can help them find her. As they break into the house, they meet Luna and Officer Valens doing the same thing. They split up, looking for anything, and each person finds a clue that will bring Olivia back. Once they are safe from the henchmen of Ms. Hera, Randi, Drew, and Luna meet up at Brooks Coffee Shop in the early morning. Marc helps them by giving them a card with clues that will lead them to the Witch of Delphi, a much stronger magic practitioner than himself. Luna and Drew are revealed to have deeper ties to each other and the town's social circles than initially apparent. Before Randi, Drew, and Luna find the Witch of Delphi, she receives a call from Marc, warning her that she's going to have an early appointment. This causes Clara, the witch, to clean her apartment while drinking her coffee and greeting her aquatic nymph neighbor, Caspia. As she's cleaning, she gets a knock at her door. Realizing that it's Andi coming by to lend a peace offering in hope that Clara can help her sister, Randi. After a short apology, Clara accepts the offer for a larger than usual payment from Andi. When Andi gets ready to leave, she hears her sister outside the witch's apartment and leaves out the back to return home. As the trio closes in on the witch, Clara is quick to identify them. Once they are able to get in contact with her, the witch switches to her professional personality to accommodate the trio. She informs them that they need the couple, Olivia and Bailey, and another item from their house in order to bring them back. As Luna fetches the couple, Randi and Drew stay behind with the witch.
