Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) ist der wichtigste Krankheitserreger bei der Entstehung von Karies, der häufigsten Infektion im Kindesalter. Laktobazillen und Bifidobakterien werden üblicherweise als Probiotika verwendet und fermentierten Lebensmitteln wie Joghurt zugesetzt; sie werden mit einer Verringerung des Kariesrisikos bei Kindern in Verbindung gebracht. Diese Studie wurde an 30 Kindern durchgeführt, die über einen Zeitraum von 6 Wochen täglich einen probiotikahaltigen Joghurt (Gruppe 1) oder einen Kontrolljoghurt (Gruppe 2) erhielten; die Anzahl der Sreptokokken-Mutans, der Gingivaindex (GI) und der Plaqueindex (PI) wurden während der 6 Wochen der Intervention und 2 Wochen danach ermittelt.
