Synopsis "Beyond Religion and Belief: Uncertainty and Religious Studies for the Anthropocene"

This book addresses, in a highly eloquent and original style, several topical issues in the study of religion in the age of Anthroposcene. Foremost, it is a critical engagement with the categories of religion and belief (and their inherent power issues) and offers a constructive (and not only deconstructive as has so far been the case in discoursive study of religion) take on the matter. The author critically discusses many classical theories of religion and formulates an amendment to functionalist approaches. The most important inspiration and resources are drawn from actor network theory and Bruno Latour as well as from Tim Fizgerald's work. The text is strongly theoretical but also presents an interesting empirical case (the ethnography of the interaction in a modern dance improvisation group) with which it demonstrates its theoretical points. The book is highly topical in emphasizing the importance of study of religion to focus on 'matters of concern' and the practical means of enduring and overcoming uncertainty and contingencies in everyday life (means that are not successfully described by using such dichotomies as science and religion). It engages emic-etic debates and the (un)equality between the researcher and the researched, emphasises the importance of religious studies to engage with neighboring disciplines such as anthropology and indigenous studies, contributes to ritual studies and addresses relational, decolonial and ethical issues.
