A partir de 1935, Albert Camus (1913-1960) llevó un irregular diario de trabajo en el que tenían cabida apuntes de muy diversa índole: proyectos de novelas y piezas teatrales, reflexiones filosóficas y morales, notas de viajes y de lectura, descripciones de paisajes, citas literarias, conversaciones escuchadas en la calle, esbozos de diálogos dramáticos, esquemas argumentales, etc. Respetando la secuencia cronológica, el primer volumen reproduce las anotaciones entre 1935 y 1942, mientras el segundo tomo se extiende desde comienzos de 1942 hasta marzo de 1951.
