Born in Lancashire in 1900, son of a director. His most famous books, Lost Horizon and Goodbye, Mr. Chips, were written during the 1930s and became bestsellers. Lost Horizon was turned into a successful Hollywood movie in 1937. For a while, Hilton was the highest-paid screenwriter in Hollywood and won an Academy Award in 1942 for his screenplay of Mrs. Miniver. Hilton continued writing novels throughout his career. He died in 1954.
