Synopsis "Clinical Xenotransplantation: Pathways and Progress in the Transplantation of Organs and Tissues Between Species"

Since the publication of the original edition, the field of xenotransplantation has expanded globally, both in terms of research and clinical applications and practice. Given the breadth and depth of new developments worldwide, this new edition of the book, providing a current snapshot of the state of the art, is a welcome and necessary addition to the literature.

The book is sensibly divided into thematic sections, with international leaders in research and practice providing succinct summaries of their areas of expertise across the wide range of subtopics. After a summation of the background, history and current state of xenotransplantation, including the International Human Xenotransplantation Inventory, established in collaboration with the International Xenotransplantation Association (IXA), subsequent sections present the latest on techniques related to gene editing in pigs, innate and adaptive immune responses and immunosuppression, and HLA and SLA sensitization. The next group of sections approaches xenotransplantation by organ system - kidney, heart, liver, lung, pancreatic islet, cornea, skin, and red blood cell xenotransfusion - followed by new methods of tolerance induction, preventing and treating infectious complications, and regenerative medicine applications. The concluding sections cover global research and ethical, social, legal, and religious considerations, among others.
