Die Technologie, mit der Clouds funktionieren, wird oft als "Cloud Computing" bezeichnet. Sie umfasst eine Art virtualisierte IT-Infrastruktur wie Server, Betriebssysteme, Netzwerke und andere Infrastrukturen, die mit Hilfe spezieller Software abstrahiert wurden, um eine gemeinsame Nutzung und Aufteilung ohne Rücksicht auf die physischen Hardwaregrenzen zu ermöglichen.
