Los años abarcados por este volumen tercero de la Correspondencia constituyen una época convulsa de la vida de Nietzsche, claramente de «transición», en la que asistimos al trasluz de sus cartas a una profunda transmutación personal precipitada por el agravamiento de sus dolencias y el distanciamiento de cuantos hasta entonces, habían sido sus más íntimos amigos. Numerosas cartas de este periodo contribuyen en buena medida a iluminar los pormenores de hechos tan decisivos en la vida de Nietzsche como su abandono definitivo de la cátedra, su distanciamiento con respecto a Schopenhauer o su ruptura con Wagner y su círculo. Tales vivencias terminarán cristalizando en un cambio de rumbo en el plano teórico, inclinando la balanza de sus intereses hacia «problemas generales» de índole cultural y filosófica, en detrimento de los específicamente filológicos, como se pondrá de manifiesto con la publicación de su obra Humano, demasiado humano, con la que se cerró algo más que el lustro que aquí se recoge.

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (October 15, 1844-Weimar, August 25, 1900) was a German philosopher, poet, musician, and philologist, whose work has had a profound influence on contemporary global thought and Western culture.
Nietzsche wrote on topics as diverse as art, philology, music, history, religion, science, and tragedy. He critiqued culture, religion, and Western philosophy through the genealogy of the concepts that integrate them, based on the analysis of moral attitudes (positive and negative) towards life.
It is particularly notable the influence exerted on Nietzsche by the also German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, whom he considered his teacher, although he did not follow Schopenhauer's ideas dogmatically, and in many aspects, he diverged from his thought, even making a radical critique of his philosophical ideas.
