Toshikazu Kawaguchi (Osaka, Japan, 1971) is an author and playwright known for his ability to blend magical realism and human sensitivity. Before turning to novels, he was a producer, director, and screenwriter for the Sonic Snail theater group, with notable works like COUPLE, Sunset Song, and Family Time. His literary debut, Before the Coffee Gets Cold (Plaza & Janés, 2021), based on his award-winning play of the same name at the Suginami Drama Festival, became an international phenomenon, selling over three million copies and achieving a successful film adaptation in Japan.

The series continues with Happiness Fits in a Cup of Coffee (2023) and The First Coffee of the Day (2025), solidifying his evocative style that explores themes such as time, memory, and human relationships. Kawaguchi has captured the attention of readers worldwide with his mix of intimate narrative and universal reflections, establishing himself as an essential voice in contemporary Japanese literature.
