Trifluoressigsäure (TFA) ist der kleinste Vertreter der "Ewigkeitschemikalien" PFAS und ist anthropogenen Ursprungs; sie wird bei industriellen Fertigungsverfahren freigesetzt und entsteht durch Abbau von Kälte- Pflanzenschutz- oder fluotierten Arzneimitteln. sie ist flüchtig, sehr hygroskopisch und chemisch stabil; dadurch reichert sie sich in der Atmosphäre an, wird dort durch den Niederschlag ausgewaschen und gelangt mit dem Regen in die Oberflächengewässer, den Erdboden und das Grundwasser. Von dort oder aus der Luft wird TFA von den Pflanzen aufgenommen und angereichert. Über die Nahrungskette gelangt TFA in die Tiere und den Menschen. TFA wird von dem BfR und der EFSA als "reproduktionshemmend" eingestuft.
