Andocides (c. 440-390 BC) was an Athenian orator and politician, member of an ancient aristocratic family that considered itself a descendant of the god Hermes. During his life, he faced accusations of impiety, including his alleged involvement in the mutilation of the hermae and the desecration of the Eleusinian Mysteries. After being exiled, he returned to Athens and defended his case in the speech "On his Return" (c. 410 BC), where he requested the restitution of his civil rights. Another of his speeches, "On the Mysteries" (c. 399 BC), presents his defense against the accusations of impiety related to the Eleusinian Mysteries. Finally, "On Peace" (c. 390 BC) is a political speech in which he advocates for peace with Sparta during the Corinthian War.

In addition to his speeches, Andocides is known for his association with the homonymous potter, who, along with the Andocides Painter, is recognized for having introduced the red-figure technique in Greek pottery around 530 BC. This innovation allowed greater precision and detail in artistic representations, marking a significant transition from the earlier black-figure technique.
