Synopsis "Doing Ethnicized Gender"

Stereotypes regarding these female migrant domestic workers can be described as (neo)racist and sexist, with these dimensions intersecting. Their aim is to integrate these migrant women into society in a manner deemed appropriate for them. Social differences are rationalised and legitimised through ethnic distinctions. Consequently, the 'others' are also used to portray native women as emancipated and modern. In this way, a native woman can naturalise the migrant woman's ability to carry out domestic work without including herself in the attribution on the basis of gender. Furthermore, due to the specific nature of paid work in the private sphere, it is essential to employ a woman who 'fits in' with the family - something one hopes to achieve by hiring someone from a correspondingly stereotyped group. This gives rise to two intersectionally stereotyped subgroups: modern, emancipated native women and traditional migrant women. By practising their respective 'doing gender', they (re)produce an ethnicised gender and thereby engage in 'doing ethnicised gender'.
