ENGLISH DESCRIPTION There are people we leave behind; there are debts we never fully pay. After the success of The Illumbe Trilogy, with over 500 000 copies sold, Mikel Santiago returns with a masterful thriller set in the heart of the Basque Country. Aitor Orizaola, "Ori," is an Ertzaintza agent in the doldrums. He is not at his best. While recovering from the violent resolution of his last case as an Ertzaintza agent and facing disciplinary proceedings, he receives bad news. His nephew Denis, whom as a child was like a son to him, has been accused of murder. But something smells fishy, and Orizaola, even though officially on leave, will not stand idly by. Denis seems to have been victim of a strange conspiracy. A false accusation, a mysterious suicide, a powerful family with much to hide... These are some of the clues that will take Orizaola, through the course of a relentless read, searching for a secret lost in the labyrinthine roads of deep Bizkaia, while struggling to solve the most important case of his life.

Mikel Santiago was born in Portugalete (Vizcaya) in 1975. From a young age, he showed artistic inclinations, alternating his interest in literature with music, playing guitar in rock bands and balancing his creative vocation with studies in Sociology at the University of Deusto. He lived a decade in Ireland and the Netherlands, experiences that shaped his cosmopolitan vision and narrative style. He currently resides in Bilbao with his family, where he continues to write and play with his band

Mikel Santiago began his literary career by publishing stories and short novels on the internet, managing to position himself on the bestseller lists of platforms like Amazon and Barnes & Noble, in Spain as well as the United States and Latin America. His leap to traditional publishing came in 2014, when he published The Last Night at Tremore Beach, a novel that marked his consecration and was translated into more than 20 languages. Santiago is considered one of the great renovators of the thriller in Spanish, with a narrative that combines mystery, unexpected twists, and an immersive setting, especially in northern Spain scenarios

Ediciones B has published his novels The Last Night at Tremore Beach (2014), The Bad Path (2015), The Strange Summer of Tom Harvey (2017), The Island of the Last Voices (2018), and The Liar (2020). Currently, he is considered one of the best international thriller authors

Throughout his career, he has won awards such as the Atea-Laboral Kutxa Saria Award in 2024, the La Sombra del Ciprés Award in 2016, and the IV Award for the Best National Thriller by Martaentrelibros and Friends in 2024.
