La historia narra las aventuras de Dorothy y su perro Totó mientras descubren el mundo mágico de Oz después de llegar a él gracias a un tornado que arrancó su casa de una pradera de Kansas. En este lugar misterioso e imposible, Dorothy emprende la búsqueda del poderoso Mago de Oz, que aparentemente es el único con el poder de enviarla de regreso a casa. En el camino, la pequeña Dorothy hace amistad con el León cobarde, el Leñador de Hojalata y el Espantapájaros, compañeros de aventuras en el viaje por el maravilloso mundo de Oz en busca del misterioso hechicero.

El Mago de Oz es una de las novelas infantiles más exitosas de todos los tiempos y es considerada el cuento de hadas norteamericano por antonomasia.
