Christoph von Schmid (1768–1854) was a German Catholic priest and writer, considered a pioneer of children's literature. Born in Dinkelsbühl, Bavaria, he studied theology in Dillingen and was ordained a priest in 1791. His work as an educator in Thannhausen inspired him to write moral stories for children, using accessible and approachable language, which marked an innovation at the time. His works, imbued with Christian values, gained great popularity and were translated into more than 24 languages

Among his most famous titles are Genoveva of Brabant (1810), The Easter Eggs (1816), The Basket of Flowers, and Christmas Eve (1825). He is also the author of the Christmas carol "Ihr Kinderlein, kommet", still sung in German-speaking countries. His autobiography, Memories of My Life, was published between 1853 and 1857. Schmid received various recognitions during his lifetime, including Bavarian nobility in 1837 and the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of Saint Michael in 1850. He died in Augsburg in 1854.
