Cuando se estudia el tema de las finanzas de empresa o finanzas corporativas esulta útil vincular sus dos aspectos básicos, que son la inversión de la empresa y sus distintas fuentes de financiación. La empresa es una forma de organizar las actividades económicas de muchos individuos, y una de las principales preocupaciones es de dónde obtener el dinero para ponerla en marcha o para realizar inversiones que sean rentables. Es por esto, que la labor del administrador financiero es considerada importantísima a la hora de maximizar el valor de las acciones. Así, combinando los tres elementos (financiación, inversión y maximización del valor de la acción), podemos concluir que la gestión financiera de una empresa (o las llamadas finanzas corporativas) sería el estudio de la relación entre las decisiones de negocios y los flujos de capital efectivo, de forma que se incremente el valor de sus acciones. El estudio de esta materia puede encontrarse por separado en numerosos libros de finanzas. Sin embargo, los autores hemos considerado útil unificar en un único libro de consulta como el que ofrecemos la revisión de conceptos teóricos de las diferentes áreas que componen las asignaturas universitarias de Dirección Financiera o Economía de la Empresa.
