In dem Buch "Goethe und der liebe Gott" geht es um das "Verhältnis des Johann Wolfgang von Goethe zum Christentum, zur Kirche und zur Religion" (Untertitel). Oft wurde in der Goethe-Forschung behauptet, dass Goethe ein "Heide" gewesen sei. Der Autor ist anderer Meinung: Goethe war ein überzeugter Protestant, der als Kind evangelisch-lutherisch getauft wurde, sich konfirmieren lie , kirchlich heiratete und schlie lich evangelisch beerdigt wurde. Zeit seines Lebens hat sich Goethe mit Religion beschäftigt, ohne jedoch ein systematisches Lehrgebäude hinterlassen zu haben. Allerdings ist sein gesamtes Werk von theologischen und religionsphilosophischen Gedanken durchzogen. In ihm wird erkennbar, dass der bibelfeste Dichterfürst aus Weimar unorthodox, kritisch und auch zweifelnd im Umgang mit Religion war - Eigenschaften, die zum evangelischen Glauben dazugehören.
