El volumen abarca 8 familias, la mayoría del Viejo Mundo (África, Eurasia y Australasia, a excepción de los mosquiteros del Nuevo Mundo y dos especies de reyezuelos del Neártico). La mitad del volumen está ocupada por los papamoscas del Viejo Mundo y las currucas del Viejo Mundo, que con 116 y 145 especies respectivamente, son las familias más numerosas.
Estas familias, como los batises y zarceros, los colimbos, los mosqueros monarca, los reyezuelos y los mosquiteros, están formadas en su mayoría por especies de hábitats con vegetación (bosques, arboledas, zonas arbustivas, cañaverales). Las especies de cisticolas y aliadas presentan la mayor variabilidad de hábitat y también pueden encontrarse en zonas áridas.
El lector encontrará ilustraciones de los elegantes papamoscas y admirará la variedad de cisticolas en una sola lámina, además de apreciar la calidad y el interés de las fotografías, como la del carricero de pico grande (Acrocephalus orinus), un excelente ejemplar tomado en Tailandia en marzo de 2006, y el primer avistamiento de la especie desde su descubrimiento en 1867.

Josep del Hoyo i Calduch (Barcelona, June 22, 1954) is a Spanish doctor, ornithologist, and publisher known for his contribution to the global dissemination of ornithology. After graduating in medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1977, he worked as a rural doctor and participated in television outreach programs. His passion for birds led him to found Lynx Edicions in 1989, dedicated to publishing works on nature.

Among his most notable works is "Handbook of the Birds of the World" (1992-2013), a 17-volume encyclopedia that describes and illustrates all bird species in the world. He has also co-edited "Handbook of the Mammals of the World" (2009-2019), focusing on mammals. For his work in spreading knowledge about biodiversity, he has received awards such as the BBVA Foundation Award for Biodiversity Conservation in 2010.
