Formado en la Universidad de Edimburgo, inició su carrera como profesor antes de consolidarse como escritor. Su obra se caracteriza por un estilo denso y retórico, así como por su visión crítica de la sociedad industrial y su interés en el liderazgo moral y espiritual. Fue una figura influyente en el pensamiento del siglo XIX, con una fuerte presencia en los debates intelectuales de su tiempo.
