Relatado por un "yo" explícito, un profesor boliviano llega a la Ciudad de México para participar en un congreso. Los pasajeros ya se enteraron en el vuelo de que un temblor de gran intensidad conmovió a la inmensa urbe. En el aeropuerto -sumido en total caos- el narrador es auxiliado por un anciano chofer del Hotel Taj Mahal. En este edificio de suma belleza e inexplicablemente no dañado en absoluto por la hecatombe, se enfrentará situaciones insólitas: su vecina de habitación, Laura, hace intentos desesperados por iniciar un nuevo contacto con él, todos ellos siempre infructuosos. Obstáculos anodinos interfieren siempre el encuentro anhelado por Laura, y propiciado, además por el dueño del hotel, el humanitario "don Porfirio"; pero, ¿esto es así en realidad?
