La ricetta di Dumas, come lo stesso autore afferma nell'introduzione, è di "resuscitare" un certo numero di anni della storia di Francia introducendovi personaggi di sua creazione e cercando di "innalzarli al livello" delle figure storiche vissute nell'epoca riportata alla luce. È così anche in questo romanzo, ove tra i personaggi immaginari possiamo citare Aurélie de Saint Amour, cortigiana dedita ai piaceri dell'amore, Diana de Fargas, eroina vendicatrice, il bel Coster de Saint Victor, amante della prima ma anche spasimante della seconda, i soldati Falou e Faraud espressione schietta del popolo. Ma I Bianchi e i Blu, forse, è anche il più storico di tutti i romanzi di A. Dumas. Esso copre un arco di storia francese dal dicembre 1793 al luglio 1999, ne rievoca i passaggi salienti e, pur non trascurando figure che oggi potremmo considerare di secondo piano (come tra i civili il letterato Charles Nodier, tra i politici il commissario del popolo Saint-Just e il direttore Barras, tra i militari i generali Pichegru, Hoche, Moreau e il vandeano Cadoudal) non può non dedicare un'attenzione particolare all'uomo destinato a sigillare con la sua impronta indelebile i primi anni del sec XIX: Napoleone Bonaparte. Anche quando l'argomento è storico, comunque, l'autore riesce a conservare al racconto (sono sempre parole di A. Dumas) "la poetica fantasia che rende la sua lettura più facile e attraente rispetto a quella della storia spoglia di ogni ornamento".

Alexandre Dumas is one of the most prolific and popular authors from France. He was born in 1802 in the city of Villers-Cotterets, and soon moved to Paris to work as a secretary for the Duke of Orléans. There, he completed his education on his own and began to take an interest in writing.
He started by writing plays, and then moved on to poems and long stories. However, his real success did not come until 1844, the year he released the work that would catapult him to fame: The Three Musketeers. The serial publication of this novel brought him a huge sum of money, but it also meant countless hours of work, many collaborators, and the production of up to eighty installments to meet the growing public demand.
After the publication of The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, Dumas amassed a great fortune. However, his hedonistic nature led him to squander all he had earned and he soon found himself forced to exile in Belgium to escape his French creditors.
The Count of Monte Cristo, the pinnacle of the author's narrative, is considered one of the greatest adventure novels of all time.
