Synopsis "Im Dezember der Wind (Quartbuch) (in German)"

Every storm has its reasons, every fate has its origin. Like a serene because powerless goddess, the grandmother sits amidst cicadas in the sluggish air of the midday heat when she explains it to Lina: why her friend Dora will marry a man who beats her - and what generation-old guilt seems to lead her inevitably into misfortune. Many years later, Lina tries to comprehend and tell: not only of Dora, but also of Catalina, Beatriz and herself. All they are young, beautiful and rich, part of the elite as conservative as frivolous Barranquillas, a city on the Colombian Caribbean coast. They are tales of dreams of freedom and humiliation, of female desire, of sex and submission, colonial heritage, and the crimes of education--but above all stories of women who become scandal. Marvel Moreno's language is an event: image-powerful, sometimes sarcastic-nasty, sometimes sensual, always relentlessly deeply sharp. A life-rich Latin American custom painting of the fifties, an all too long hidden treasure of world literature - finally in outstanding German first translation.

Marvel Moreno was born in Barranquilla in 1939. As a teenager, under her father's guidance, she began reading major writers of classical and modern literature, and in the sixties, she focused on the major contemporary authors who would have a definitive influence on her writing. Among others, these included James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Carson McCullers, and William Faulkner. She maintained a close relationship with members of the "Grupo de Barranquilla": Alejandro Obregón, Álvaro Cepeda Samudio, Gabriel García Márquez, and Germán Vargas, who was decisive for her literary life. In October 1969, she published "El muñeco", her first story, in Eco magazine, and shortly after in El Magazín Dominical de El Espectador. In 1980, she published her first book of stories, Algo tan feo en la vida de una señora bien. Her novel En diciembre llegaban las brisas (Alfaguara, 2014) won the Grinzane Cavour Prize in 1989 and was a finalist for the Plaza y Janés International Literary Prize. In 1992, she published a second book of stories, El encuentro y otros relatos. She died in 1995 in Paris, shortly after finishing a third book of stories, Las fiebres del Miramar, which is part of the compilation of her Complete Stories (Alfaguara, 2017), and her last novel, El tiempo de las amazonas (Alfaguara, 2020).
