Mario Liverani (1939) is an emeritus professor of Ancient Near East History at the University of Rome "La Sapienza". Former director of the Centro per le Antichità e la Storia dell’Arte del Vicino Oriente and the Istituto di Studi del Vicino Oriente, as well as the journals Oriens Antiquus and Vicino Oriente, he is a member of the American Oriental Society and an honorary doctorate from the Autonomous University of Madrid. His classic Antico Oriente. Storia, società, economia (1988) is accompanied by, among many other books, L’origine delle città (1986), Uruk la prima città (1998), and, more recently, Oltre la Bibbia.
