Mit ihrer Kunst wollte Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945) die Menschen erreichen, sie direkt ansprechen, an ihr Gewissen rühren. Gegen den Trend der zeitgenössischen Avantgarde-Kunst blieb sie gegenständlich, das heißt für alle verständlich. Aus demselben Grund entschied sie sich für die knappe, deutliche Sprache der Grafik, die ihrem Werk eine ungeahnte Breitenwirkung sicherte. Schon zu Lebzeiten war sie eine der populärsten Künstlerinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Und ist es bis heute geblieben, wie die vielbeachtete Retrospektive belegt, die ihr das Frankfurter Städel-Museum in diesem Jahr widmete (bis 9. Juni).
