Alors que la Première Guerre mondiale bat son plein, Marthe (18 ans), fiancée de circonstance à un soldat (Jacques), entretient une relation sexuelle avec le narrateur, jeune garçon désoeuvré de 15 ans, donc trop jeune pour être mobilisé et qui l'a séduite par provocation.
