He was born in Moquegua on June 14, 1894. After a brief stay in Huacho with his mother and siblings, José Carlos Mariátegui moved to Lima

He was self-taught, as he could not finish his school education due to his early illness. At only 14 years old, he started working at the newspaper La Prensa as an operator, but soon due to his intellectual capacity, he became one of the most important and prominent journalists in the country. Contributor to various important written media of his time. Mariátegui also founded publications such as the newspaper La Razón and the magazine Nuestra Época, among others. In 1919, with Augusto B. Leguía as president, he was forced to move to Europe, where he encountered Marxism and identified as a socialist

He returned to Peru in 1923 and established a close relationship with the burgeoning worker-craftsman movement. He directed the Universidad Popular Manuel González Prada and its magazine Claridad. In 1925 he published his first book, La escena contemporánea. In 1926 he launched the great magazine Amauta, in 1928 he published the most read Peruvian book of all times, 7 ensayos de interpretación de la realidad peruana. In the same year, he founded the Socialist Party and the magazine Labor

In 1929 he promoted the formation of the General Confederation of Workers of Peru. He died on April 14, 1930 when he was just 35 years old.
