Alexandre Chatrian (nombre completo Alexandre Chatrian), nacido en 1826 en Soldatenthal, fue un escritor francés cuya trayectoria quedó indisolublemente ligada a la de Émile Erckmann. Juntos firmaron como Erckmann-Chatrian, convirtiéndose en una de las duplas literarias más reconocibles del siglo XIX. Su colaboración mezclaba imaginación popular, mirada crítica hacia la sociedad francesa y un gusto particular por lo inquietante, lo fantástico y las tradiciones rurales de Alsacia y Lorena.

Entre los relatos más representativos de esta autoría conjunta se encuentra “Hugues-le-Loup”, difundido en español como Hugo el lobo y otros relatos de terror, cuya atmósfera sombría y enfoque psicológico reflejan el sello narrativo del dúo. Chatrian aportó sensibilidad política y un agudo sentido del carácter humano, lo que enriqueció tanto sus obras fantásticas como las históricas. Su influencia perdura en la evolución del cuento europeo de terror y en la literatura folclórica francesa.
