Marianna Sirca, orfana di madre, ancora bambina era stata mandata dal padre Berte a servizio da un ricco zio prete. Alla morte di quest'ultimo Marianna riceve una cospicua eredità. Così, sulla soglia dei trent'anni, si ritrova con alle spalle una giovinezza spenta e con la possibilità di decidere per il suo futuro. Quindi dà corso al suo amore da troppo tempo represso, in un giorno di giugno, rincontra un giovane, suo ex servo che ora è diventato bandito, Simone Sole. Nasce una grande passione. Ambedue i personaggi avevano da poco acquistato la loro libertà; quella di lei garantita dalla sua ricchezza, quella di Simone dal suo stare al di fuori dalla società (ma non contro), unico modo disponibile per affermare la propria personalità. Infatti Simone era diventato bandito per ribellione, per sottrarsi alla sua misera condizione, ma non era un sanguinario e da quando viveva alla macchia non si era macchiato di alcun grave delitto. Marianna sceglie di amare senza calcolo, decide così di sposare il bandito. Tuttavia ben presto dopo il divampare della passione subentra il senso della realtà, intervengono le ineludibili convenzioni sociali che richiedono il sacrificio del sogno. Infatti la condizione ineludibile perché il loro amore possa avere un futuro è che Simone dovrà costituirsi per scontare la sua pena.

Grazia Deledda was an outstanding Italian writer born on September 27, 1871 in Nuoro, on the island of Sardinia, and died on August 15, 1936 in Rome. She is widely recognized for having won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1926, being the second woman to receive this award. Her work is characterized by portraying the life, customs, and moral conflicts of the Sardinian people, especially in rural and traditional environments

From a young age, she showed a great passion for writing, despite not having received extensive formal education. She published her first novel at the age of 17 and continued writing throughout her life, with a style influenced by Italian verismo and the ideals of decadentism. Among her most famous works are Canne al vento, Elias Portolu, and La madre, where she addresses themes such as the struggle between duty and desire, the weight of tradition, and human suffering

Grazia Deledda was a pioneer in giving voice to women and to the peripheral regions of Italy in national literature. Her legacy remains important for the psychological depth of her characters and for her contribution to universal literature.
