George Brandt Bridgman (1864-1943) nació en la provincia canadiense de Ontario. Bridgman creció en Toronto, Canadá, donde asistió a la Escuela de Arte de Ontario antes de trasladarse a París en 1883. Bridgman fue alumno de Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) en la aclamada École de Beaux-Arts, una escuela que se centraba principalmente en el dibujo al natural con carboncillo. La École de Beaux-Arts formó a muchos de los primeros profesores de la Art Students League de Nueva York. Tras trabajar con Gérôme, Bridgman estudió con Gustave Boulanger (1824-1988) antes de establecerse en la ciudad de Nueva York en 1889, donde permanecería durante toda su carrera.
