Richard Courant fue un influyente matemático alemán-estadounidense, nacido en 1888 y reconocido por sus aportes tanto en la investigación como en la divulgación matemática. Discípulo de David Hilbert, se destacó en análisis matemático y ecuaciones diferenciales parciales, y más tarde emigró a Estados Unidos, donde fundó el Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences en la Universidad de Nueva York, un centro de referencia mundial en investigación matemática. Su labor fue fundamental para tender puentes entre la matemática teórica y sus aplicaciones prácticas.

Su obra más conocida para el gran público es ¿Qué son las matemáticas?, escrita junto a Herbert Robbins, un libro que ha sido considerado una introducción magistral a la belleza y utilidad de la disciplina. En él se conjugan rigor, claridad y un espíritu divulgador que lo ha mantenido vigente por generaciones.
