Le magazine France football l'a dsign meilleur footballeur franais du sicle, tandis que la Juventus de Turin l'a lu meilleur Bianconero de tous les temps. Le 26 janvier 2007, il est lu prsident de l'UEFA succdant ainsi Lennart Johansson. Il fut galement slectionneur de l'quipe de France de football de 1988 1992 et co-organisateur avec Fernand Sastre de la Coupe du monde de football de 1998 en France.
