Edith Hamilton fue una escritora, educadora y estudiosa estadounidense de la Antigüedad clásica. Nació el 12 de agosto de 1867 en Dresde, Alemania, en una familia estadounidense, y creció en Fort Wayne, Indiana. Estudió en Bryn Mawr College, donde obtuvo títulos en lenguas clásicas. Posteriormente continuó sus estudios en las universidades de Leipzig y Múnich, siendo una de las primeras mujeres en acceder a estudios clásicos en esas instituciones.

Entre 1896 y 1922 dirigió como rectora la Bryn Mawr School de Baltimore, una institución educativa para jóvenes. Después de retirarse de la enseñanza inició una segunda etapa de su carrera dedicada a la escritura y al estudio de las civilizaciones antiguas.

Su primera obra importante fue The Greek Way, publicada en 1930. Posteriormente escribió The Roman Way (1932), The Prophets of Israel (1936), Mythology (1942) y The Echo of Greece (1957). Su libro Mythology se convirtió en una de sus obras más famosas, al presentar de manera accesible los principales mitos griegos, romanos y nórdicos.

En 1957 recibió la ciudadanía honoraria de Atenas como reconocimiento a su contribución a la difusión de la literatura y cultura griegas. Edith Hamilton murió el 31 de mayo de 1963 en Washington D. C., a los 95 años.
