Elmer Week is eighty-six, dying of cancer, and determined to complete one last item on his bucket list. Convinced his son has abandoned him to spend his final days in a California care facility, Elmer stages a desperate escape with a single goal in mind: cross the border into Mexico and urinate on the country he blames for ruining his life. There's just one problem, he needs a driver. His reluctant accomplice is Luis, a Chicano orderly who immediately recognizes Elmer as everything he despises: stubborn, manipulative, and casually prejudiced. Forced into stealing a van and heading south, the two embark on an unlikely road trip filled with sharp humor, bitter arguments, unexpected detours, and moments of surprising humanity. As the miles roll by, old wounds begin to surface, challenging both men's assumptions about identity, family, and the stories people tell themselves. To reach the border, Elmer must stay alive long enough to outrun the authorities, avoid being returned to the care facility, and convince Luis not to leave him behind. But the closer they get to Mexico, the less certain Elmer becomes that revenge is truly what brought him there. At once hilarious, poignant, and deeply human, Nobody's Hero is a moving novel about forgiveness, redemption, and discovering that it's never too late to confront the past, or yourself.
