Spektroskopie ist die Untersuchung der Wechselwirkung elektromagnetischer Strahlung mit Materie. Die optische Spektroskopie wird häufig zur Charakterisierung nanostrukturierter Materialien eingesetzt und lässt sich grob in zwei Arten unterteilen: Absorptions- und Emissionsspektroskopie sowie Schwingungsspektroskopie. Unter diesen wird die Absorptions- und Emissionsspektroskopie zur Bestimmung der elektronischen Struktur von Atomen, Ionen, Molekülen usw. verwendet. Die Untersuchung des Verhaltens von Elektronen in Atomen oder Molekülen, die durch die Absorption von Photonen geeigneter Energie aus ihrem Grundzustand in einen bestimmten höheren Zustand angeregt werden, wird als Absorptionsspektroskopie bezeichnet. Die in höhere Zustände angeregten Elektronen sind kurzlebig und kehren durch verschiedene Prozesse in ihren Ausgangszustand zurück. Die Untersuchung des Verhaltens solcher Elektronen, die in den Grundzustand zurückfallen, wird als Emissionsspektroskopie bezeichnet.
