Naoki Higashida was born in Kimitsu, Japan, in 1992. At the age of five, he was diagnosed with severe autism, but learned to communicate using a handmade alphabet grid and began writing poems and stories. At thirteen, he wrote The Reason I Jump, which was published in Japan in 2007. Its English translation was released in 2013 and has since been published in more than thirty languages. Since then, Higashida has published several books in Japan, including children's and illustrated books, poems, and essays. In 2014, he was featured in an award-winning Japanese documentary and continues to give presentations across the country about his experience with autism.
