Invitado en Lyon a un simposio internacional sobre la novela, un doble del escritor Vila-Matas es dejado por un taxi en su hotel sin que allí nadie le dé la bienvenida. En la soledad de su habitación redacta una teoría general de la novela, incidiendo especialmente en los cinco elementos «irrenunciables, imprescindibles» que deben reunir los textos para pertenecer al nuevo siglo, mientras la organización que le ha invitado a Lyon sigue sin ponerse en contacto con él. De regreso a Barcelona, le parece descubrir la futilidad de todo ensayo y de todo viaje y quizás incluso la futilidad de todo, de modo que acabará destruyendo la teoría, si bien ésta podría servirle a alguien para escribir Dublinesca.

Enrique Vila-Matas (Barcelona, 1948) is one of the most influential writers in contemporary Spanish-language literature, known for his style that blends fiction, essay, and autofiction. Among his most notable novels are El viaje vertical (1999), El mal de Montano (2002), París no se acaba nunca (2003), and Montevideo (2022).
