Synopsis "Popol Vuh"

Toen de Spanjaarden in 1524 de hooglanden van Guatemala veroverden vernietigden ze alle documenten waar zij duivelse rituelen in herkenden. Om de rijke cultuur van zijn voorouders voor het nageslacht te bewaren besloot een Quiché Maya in het geheim om het belangrijkste manuscript van zijn gemeenschap, de Popol Vuh, in een Latijns alfabet over te schrijven. De Popol Vuh werd waarschijnlijk geschreven tussen 1554 en 1558 en omvat het scheppingsverhaal en de geschiedenis volgens de Quiché Maya's tot aan de veroveringen door Pedro de Alvarado.
