En cada uno de los relatos míticos prehispánicos, las comunidades indígenas pretendían explicarse el mundo, su constitución y la creación misma del hombre. Popol Vuh es un libro escrito en lengua quiche con el auxilio del alfabeto castellano que describe el origen de la comunidad maya-quiché, su microcosmos y las creencias que los llevan a considerar el maíz como elemento vital, dado que con este se moldeó la figura del hombre y lo alimentó desde tiempos inmemoriales. Popol Vuh es el drama mitológico más importante de América: allí se encuentran noticias relativas a las migraciones, la distribución del territorio, las guerras y lecciones de moral que orientan en la comprensión de la civilización quiche hasta poco antes de la conquista española.
