Un espectro recorre las democracias. La vida política de los últimos años ha estado marcada por una nueva polarización entre los partidos representativos del " sistema " de la democracia liberal y un populismo que es presentado como los nuevos bárbaros " ad portas " . Lo cierto es que el populismo no es nuevo ni tiene una acepción clara; de hecho, ni siquiera es propiamente una ideología. Pero ahí está, instituyéndose en uno de los polos en la lucha por la hegemonía política del presente, porque lo único que no ofrece dudas es su desafío a la forma de hacer política que nos acompañaba desde la posguerra. Y ello cuando desde hacía un tiempo ya se había detectado en las democracias occidentales un divorcio creciente entre gobernantes y ciudadanos, " fatiga civil " , la falta de alternativas reales... El presente libro aborda el populismo examinando sus características y variedades, las condiciones y afectos que lo alimentan, y las experiencias más importantes de los últimos años en Estados Unidos, Francia, España...

Fernando Vallespín Oña (Madrid, 1954) is a distinguished political scientist and professor of Political Science at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He has held significant positions such as president of the Center for Sociological Research (2004–2008) and academic director of the Ortega-Marañón Foundation (2012–2015). His academic work has focused on political theory and contemporary thought, with over a hundred articles and chapters published in specialized journals. He has been a visiting professor at universities such as Harvard, Heidelberg, and Frankfurt, and regularly contributes to media outlets like El País newspaper.

Among his most recognized works are History of Political Theory (1990–2003), a six-volume collection he directed and co-wrote; New Theories of the Social Contract (1985); The Future of Politics (2000); The Lie Will Set You Free (2012); and Populisms (2017), co-written with Máriam Martínez-Bascuñán. His approach combines theoretical analysis with critical reflection on democracy and contemporary challenges. Although he has not received specific awards, his influence in the academic field and his participation in public debate consolidate him as a key figure in Spanish political science.
