At any given moment different paths open up in front of us, and we are continually presented with the alternative of going here or going there. Then we decide, we cut out from a set of infinite possibilities and choose a single path. But do we really choose? Is it really a question of a choice, when we go here rather than there? Is it really a choice, when masses go to shopping centers, when revolutions are transformed into massacres, when nations enter into war? It is not we who decide but the concatenations: machines for the liberation of desires and mechanisms of control over the imaginary. The fundamental bifurcation is always this one: between machines for liberating desire and mechanisms of control over the imaginary. In our time of digital mutation, technical automatisms are taking control of the social psyche.Franco "Bifo" Berardi is a contemporary writer, media-theorist and media-activist. He founded the magazine A/traverso (1975-1981) and was part of the staff of Radio Alice, the first free pirate radio station in Italy (1976-1978). He is author of numerous books, including Cyberpunk, The Panther and the Rbizome, Politics of Mutation, Philosophy and Polities in the Twilight of Modernity, and The Factory of Unhappiness. He is currently collaborating on the magazine DeriveApprodi as well as teaching social history of communication at the Accademia di belle Arti in Milan.

Franco “Bifo” Berardi (nacido en Bolonia en 1949) es un filósofo, escritor y agitador cultural italiano muy influyente dentro del movimiento autonomista. Se formó en estética en la Universidad de Bolonia y participó activamente en el movimiento estudiantil de 1968. Durante los años 70, fue fundador de la revista A/Traverso y cofundador de Radio Alice, la primera emisora pirata de Italia, clave en el activismo mediático de la época. También fue parte del grupo Potere Operaio y vivió en París tras ser perseguido durante la represión estatal, donde encontró influencias intelectuales de Félix Guattari. Más adelante, pasó tiempo en ciudades como Nueva York y San Francisco.

Hoy enseña historia social de la comunicación en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Brera, en Milán, y ha sido pionero en movimientos como TV Orfeo, la primera televisión comunitaria italiana. Como ensayista, ha publicado decenas de libros en diversos idiomas, abordando temas como el trabajo, la comunicación, la alienación, la psicopolítica y los efectos del capitalismo posindustrial.

Es autor de obras destacadas como La fábrica de la infelicidad, Generación post-alfa, Fenomenología del fin, La sublevación, El umbral y La segunda venida, entre muchas otras. Su pensamiento combina crítica cultural, análisis del trabajo y propuestas poéticas y subjetivas para enfrentar el semiocapitalismo moderno.
