Der jüdische Klinikleiter Dr. Bernhardi untersagt einem katholischen Priester, einer im Sterben liegenden Patientin die Absolution zu erteilen, da sie sich auf dem Weg der Genesung wähnt und er ihr nicht die letzten frohen Stunden rauben möchte. Als die Frau dann stirbt, wird dies der Ausgangspunkt einer folgenschweren öffentlichen Hetzkampagne gegen den Juden Bernhardi. Arthur Schnitzler (1862-1931) skizziert in diesem Drama die politischen und religiösen Problematiken in Österreich um 1900. Ein besonderes Augenmerk richtet er dabei auf den verstärkten Antisemitismus, von dem er selbst betroffen war.
