(Egypt 1931 - 2021) Born into a wealthy family in Egypt, and at a young age suffered genital mutilation. Studied Medicine at Cairo University. Working as a doctor in Kafr Tahl, she observed the difficulties and inequalities faced by rural women. She was the director of Public Health in Cairo. However, she was dismissed from her position in the Ministry of Health due to her political activities, which also cost her the positions of editor-in-chief of a health newspaper and deputy secretary-general of the Egyptian Medical Association. Between 1973 and 1976, she worked on researching neurosis in women at Ain Shams University, and between 1979 and 1980, she was an advisor to the United Nations for the Women's Program in Africa (CEP) and the Middle East (CEPA). She was imprisoned in 1981 for her opposition to the Camp David Peace Accords between Egypt and Israel by President Anwar al Sadat. In 1991, after receiving death threats from Islamists, she went into exile in the United States and began working as a professor at the University of Washington. In 1996, she returned to Egypt to continue her activism for women's rights, especially through her written work.
