Synopsis "Sergio Larrain: Valparaíso"

Chilean photographer Sergio Larrain (1931–2012) published very few books during his lifetime, but perhaps the most fêted among them was Valparaíso. He photographed this Chilean seaport throughout his career, but it was in the early 1960s, when he returned to his homeland after travelling the world for many years as a Magnum photographer, that it became a focus for his attention. He saw it as ‘a rather sordid yet romantic city’, standing between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, falling into a slow decline as its trading importance faded away, yet still retaining hints of beauty and magic. Now published in English for the first time with an introduction by Agnès Sire as well as a specially written text by Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda, this new edition of Valparaíso is based on a layout that Larrain designed in 1993, in response to the original French edition of 1991. It also includes a selection of previously unpublished photographs taken between 1952 and 1992, expanding the original 36 images to a total of 120. This intimate book features handwritten notes and texts by the artist himself, allowing us to share his singular vision of the world and its moments of grace.Table of ContentsIntroduction by Pablo Neruda • The photographs

Sergio Larraín was born in 1931 in Santiago, Chile. Throughout his life, he was surrounded by music, books, and paintings thanks to his father, Sergio Larraín García Moreno, a great art connoisseur and architect. Larraín began his photography career in 1949 and, from then until 1953, studied forestry at the University of California in Berkeley. He then attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor before embarking on a journey through Europe and the Middle East. This marked the start of Larraín's work as a freelance photographer. He became a staff photographer for the Brazilian magazine O Cruzeiro and in 1956 the Museum of Modern Art in New York purchased two of his photographs.

In 1958, Larraín received a scholarship from the British Council which allowed him to take a series of photographs of London. That same year, Henri Cartier-Bresson saw his photographs of street children and suggested he work for Magnum. Larraín spent two years in Paris, where he worked for international press publications. He became a partner of Magnum in 1959 and a full member in 1961. He returned to Chile in 1961 when the poet Pablo Neruda invited him to photograph his house.

In 1968 he came into contact with Bolivian guru Óscar Ichazo and virtually abandoned photography to devote himself to the study of Eastern culture and mysticism, adopting a lifestyle in line with his ideals. He dedicated himself to spreading yoga, writing, oil painting, and occasionally taking some photographs.

Sergio Larraín continued living and working in Chile until his death in the mountainous northern city of Ovalle on February 7, 2012.
