THEY HAVE EACH OTHER’S BACKS IN A FIREFIGHT. BUT TRUST IS A DIFFERENT KIND OF BATTLEFIELD. Captain Alex Ridgeway has a ship, a crew, a growing reputation, and an impressive talent for turning simple jobs into complicated disasters. Fortunately, she has backup. Hank Nuria has stood beside her through firefights, bounty hunts, and the occasional decision that seemed perfectly reasonable right up until people started shooting. Beside him is Cyd, a seven-foot mech with overwhelming firepower and an irritating devotion to statistical accuracy. Business is good. Which is usually exactly when things go wrong. What starts as a simple favor for Alex's sister quickly spirals into a chaotic gauntlet. Suddenly, the crew of the Artemis is running from smugglers, dodging con artists, and dealing with an alien creature with serious anger-management issues. There are enough people chasing them to make Alex wonder whether somebody has started handing out maps to her ship. But the greatest threat to her crew isn't coming from outside the hull. Alex has always survived by keeping information close and making the hard decisions herself. But as the pressure mounts, Hank is beginning to wonder whether being her partner means anything if she doesn't trust him enough to let him share the risk. This time, Alex can't shoot her way out of the problem. The Backup is a fast-moving, character-driven science-fiction adventure about bounty hunters, bad plans, dangerous favors, and the uncomfortable discovery that having someone's back means trusting them with yours.
