As the story unfolds, the reader is introduced to these concepts while the narrator recalls his life in the Royal Navy, operational missions, riotously good times across the world, a doomed marriage and his many adulteries and personal failings. The Divine Sea is a strangely mystical book. On the surface, it is a tale of romance and the quest for the narrator's true love, prophesised days before his 18th birthday. However, the story teems with thematic imagery rising and falling like waves in illustration of the concepts being introduced as the reader follows the story. You won't have read anything quite like this before and it may help you to discover the thematic structures hidden in your own life.
